How to Reduce Your Email Bounce Rate Below 1%
· 5 min
Understanding bounce types
A hard bounce means the address is permanently undeliverable — the mailbox doesn't exist or the domain is dead. A soft bounce is temporary — full inbox, server down, message too large. Hard bounces must be removed immediately. Soft bounces should be retried 2-3 times, then removed if they persist.
Use double opt-in
Double opt-in requires new subscribers to click a confirmation link before being added to your list. This eliminates typos, fake addresses, and bot signups in one step. Yes, it reduces your signup rate by 10-20%, but the subscribers you keep are real, engaged, and won't bounce.
Validate before every send
Even with double opt-in, addresses decay. People leave jobs, abandon free email accounts, and domains expire. Run your list through a validation tool before every campaign. This catches addresses that became invalid since your last send and keeps your bounce rate predictable.
Monitor and react in real-time
Set up monitoring on your ESP dashboard. If you see bounce rates creeping above 0.5% on any campaign, stop and investigate immediately. Check for bad segments, imported lists, or addresses that were added without validation. The faster you react, the less damage to your reputation.
Maintain a suppression list
Keep a running list of all addresses that have hard-bounced, unsubscribed, or complained. This list should be global across all campaigns and permanent. Never re-add a suppressed address, even if it appears on a new import. Your suppression list is your safety net.
