How to Check If an Email Address Exists (Without Sending an Email)
· 6 min
Why a valid domain is not enough
An address like jane.doe@company.com can pass every syntax check, sit on a domain with working MX records, and still bounce — because the mailbox jane.doe simply doesn't exist. People leave companies, mistype their own address in forms, or invent one to get a download. Syntax and DNS checks catch broken domains and typos, but only a mailbox check tells you whether that specific inbox is real.
How mailbox (SMTP) verification works
Every mail server speaks SMTP. A verifier connects to the recipient's mail server the same way a sending server would: it introduces itself (EHLO), states a sender (MAIL FROM), and names the recipient (RCPT TO). The server answers that last command with a code: 250 means it accepts the mailbox, 550 with an enhanced code like 5.1.1 means the user is unknown. The verifier then disconnects (QUIT) before the DATA step, so no message is ever sent and the person is never contacted.
Catch-all domains: the honest limit
Some domains are configured to accept every address, real or not. These are called catch-all domains, and Yahoo behaves this way at the RCPT stage too. A good verifier detects this by also asking about a random address that can't exist: if the server accepts it, the domain is catch-all and the mailbox can't be confirmed. Those addresses should be labeled risky, not valid — any tool that marks them 'valid' is overstating what it knows.
Doing it safely
Never run SMTP checks from your own sending server or office IP. Mail providers watch for connections that probe many recipients, and you don't want that activity tied to the IP or domain you send campaigns from. Verification should run from dedicated infrastructure with a proper reverse DNS (PTR) record, a matching EHLO name, an SPF record for the sender domain, and gentle per-server rate limits. Temporary answers (4xx, greylisting) should be reported as unknown, never as invalid.
